After driving for miles down a long road in rural Rajasthan, a gypsy camp sprouts up like a mirage on the side of the road. A few moments of uncertainty arise after stepping out of the car as a few men come to greet an unknown woman and her translator. A girl washing her long black hair in a blue plastic tub at the front of the camp looks up and smiles and opens the welcome to stay. The men agree that we can come in and meet everyone.
The young gypsies seem to dominate the population here and excitedly run over with curiosity. Some of the little ones seem like somber adults while others have the playful twinkle of a child in their eyes. Most of them wear charms of protection around their necks. The camp seems barren and minimal. Perhaps it is just a temporary stop on their travels to someplace else. A beautiful girl with green eyes and freckles emerges to join the group, carrying a long pink veil that trails on the ground. She is regal and graceful- a future queen of the gypsies.
