There is no place like India. The rich palette of diversity, culture, spirituality, and beauty of its people enchants me every moment I am there. It seems impossible to be able to express all of the vastness and richness this land holds. India’s all encompassing embrace welcomes and challenges all, asking those who come to dissolve, open, question, and ultimately become more human. Each person there holds the essence of India in their being, reflecting something in their eyes, a gesture, or in the drape of a sari.
Wandering within the hidden Hindu temples of Varanasi, each room opens its secrets in the form of rituals and constant preparation for rituals. The daily upkeep of the temples, making food, offering pujas, doing laundry for the community is a way of life for many.
In Rajasthan, the people of the villages live a humble life but dress royally. Women adorn themselves with all sorts of jewelry, brightly colored saris, and henna tattoos. Even the children dress with a sense of style. Men look like the sons kings from whom they are descended with their regal moustaches, dress shirts, dhotis, and big colorful turbans. A chance meeting with a newlywed couple on the side of a desert road feels like witnessing a moment from the time of the Maharajas. While the bride hides demurely under her red veil, the groom proudly stands adorned in a pink scarf and pearls with his hand firmly placed on his gold sword hanging at his side.
